With deep sadness, we announce the passing of John Burtin Couch, age 88, of Rockwood, Tennessee. John departed to the loving arms of his Savior, passing peacefully Monday morning, December 21, 2020 at Roane Medical Center. Born on June 5, 1932 in Russell County, VA, he spent a happy childhood with his parents and siblings in the Stevens area of Wise County. Shortly after graduating from Wise High School, John joined the Army to serve his country and fought in the Korean War. After returning home, John married his high school sweetheart Phyllis Ann Whitney Couch, they enjoyed a wonderful life together with 58 years of marriage and four children. John went to college on the GI bill and after graduating worked as a Hospital Administrator until his retirement. Many in the community know and love him from his time serving as Administrator of Chamberlain Memorial Hospital. John loved and served the Lord and was a lifelong Deacon at Rockwood First Baptist Church. John lived a full life as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved to do wood working and made many beautiful treasures. He also enjoyed planting in his garden, hunting, fishing, hiking, picking blueberries, and sitting outside on his swing watching the birds. Most of all John loved his family dearly. He will be greatly missed, and forever in our hearts.

He is preceded in death by his beloved Wife, Phyllis; Parents, Charles W. and Sinda Jane Sturgill Couch; Sisters, Wilma Shupe, Thelma Couch, Ruby Bailey and Barbara Ann Bradley; Brothers, Howard Couch and Lacy “Buddy” Couch.

He is survived by his beloved children Tim Couch and wife Angie of Rockwood, TN, Alisa Smith and husband Greg of Harriman, TN, Karen Martin and husband Jack of Harriman, TN and Jennifer Goldberg and husband Tony of Rockwood, TN; his grandchildren, Dustin Smith, Heather Wolfe, Megan Nelson, Karly Fry, Cassidy Pugh, Skylar Martin, McKenna Bradshaw, and Adyson Goldberg; his great-grandchildren, Malia Wolfe, Lily Wolfe and Coen Pugh; and his sister, Deanie Dotson.

The family will have a graveside service on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 2:00pm in the Martin Cemetery. Rev. Charles Kelly will be officiating. An online register is available at evansmortuary.biz. Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, Tennessee is serving the family of Mr. John Couch.
