Dorothy Helen Sliger Holmes was born on March 13, 1934. She passed from this world to her heavenly home on July 9, 2026. Although her birthplace was WaKeeney, Kansas, for the most part she grew up in the community of Pine Hill, Tennessee, with two older brothers and one younger brother. Bradley County High School in Cleveland, Tn was her alma mater and where she met the love of her life, James Holmes. She and James married as soon as they graduated high school in 1951. They moved to Rockwood in 1952 and bought a house on Hillside Rd where they lived for 68 years before James passed away in 2023. Dorothy stayed in the home until April of 2024 when she moved to Sycamore Trace assisted living facility in Kingston, Tennessee. Even though she was blind she connected with several of the residents and loved her caregivers. You might find her in the front room listening to music (loudly, as she couldn’t hear well) and doing a little bougie dancing. Or reciting poetry or singing “Down in The Valley”. She never complained about not being able to see. Dorothy just took whatever life gave her and went with it. She might tell you that she was blind, just so you would know. As her mind deteriorated she started being afraid she would fall. She was not afraid of dying though and talked about “going home”. She longed for the day she would see her “Jimbo” as most everyone called him. They had been married for 71 years before his death in 2023. Dorothy was a stay at home mom when her three children were younger. Later, after getting her degree as a professional secretary she went to work at the hosiery mill in Rockwood. She would stay there for 20 years as payroll clerk and among other duties. After that she worked for TVA at Watts Barr for 8 years before retiring. “Dot Dot”, as she was affectionately called was preceded in death by her parents, Joe B. Sliger and Thelma McPhail Sliger. Husband of 71 years, James A. Holmes. Brothers, Kenneth Sliger and Glenn Sliger. Her two sons, Charles Randy Holmes and Dennis G. Holmes. She is survived by a daughter, Gail Neal of Rockwood, and stand in son, best buddy, and care giver, Lee (Fish) Fisher.
